Description
This book is a comprehensive guide to the new Eco-paints which make use of `gentle chemistry' based on plant oils which use minimal energy in processing and can be composted safely when it comes to disposal.
The book is divided into three parts. The first describes the components and production of both mainstream and eco-paints in clear and elegant prose. Binders, solvents, pigments and fillers and the energy required to process them are simply explained. The waste from the manufacture of mainstream paints is at least 10 times the volume of the finished product - for speciality paints this can rise to 30 times the volume. The waste from cold-pressed linseed oil, on the other hand, is a nourishing food for cattle.
The second part of the book deals with the many different types of eco-paints, finishes and varnishes, from simple distemper upwards. It is important to select the right paint for the job: although distemper is easily made it marks easily and is not washable. Natural Oil Resin Emulsions are washable and even scrubbable, and Clay Paint, which we have in our house, gives a soft, attractive, breathable finish and also fills fine cracks and is washable. After each description there is an `At a glance' table for quick reference, making the book very user-friendly.
At the back is a glossary of terms, but this is almost unnecessary as the text makes clear the meaning of all the unusual words as it goes along. Suggestions for further reading and a list of suppliers of eco-paints completes, in just over a hundred pages, this excellent publication.
