Description
Alvar Aalto was concerned about the social aspect in all building. This was evident in his residential architecture, which lead him to create innovative solutions early in his career.
This book contains not only a pictorial record of Aalto's collective housing but also a discussion of Aalto's ideals about dwelling. It includes texts by Markku Lahti, head of the Alvar Aalto Foundation, and architect and researcher Sirkkaliisa Jetsonen. It also features reproductions of Aalto's original drawings, together with photographs by Jari Jetsonen taken especially for this book.
With a preface by Peter Reed, Curator of Architecture and Design at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Alvar Aalto Apartments presents ten apartment blocks and two student dormitories designed by Aalto and built in Finland, Sweden, Germany, Switzerland and the United States between the 1920sand theend of the 1960s.
