Description
After a long period of vacancy, one of the most beautiful twentieth century power stations ever, Cottbus Diesel Power Station, on an island on the River Spree right next to the old part of town, has been dazzlingly reopened as an art museum for the Brandenburg Cultural Foundation. Anderhalten Architects carried out a refurbishment process that remained true to monument protection guidelines; the expressionist brick structure was carefully converted to produce abstract-modernist exhibition spaces of various size for the Cottbus collection of contemporary art.
A structure-in-structure principle preserves the character of the historical ensemble comprising a turbine building, a transformation building and a switch building while simultaneously preserving and making accessible its atmosphere. The concrete cubes inserted provide show rooms of optimal lighting and temperature regulation to meet international standards. Controversial yet respectful, the dialogue between this cultural monuments historical charisma and its new contemporary architectural language injects fresh spirit into this building ensemble.
