Description

The term civilities relates to the conventions that regulate community life. In a fitting coincidence, it is alsoa combination of the words'civic' and 'facilities'.

This is the first in a new a+t series presenting a new focus on communal life and the buildings that facilitate associated interactions. In some ways this is a very wide-ranging topic, hence many different kinds of buildings and programmes are covered by that description. Civic facilities are more than just utilitarian areas like libraries, gyms, health centres or youth clubs - they behave as focal points for cultural life, service nodes, meeting places and dynamic forces that extend their influence beyond their immediate environment.

28 projects from around the world are featured, from London schools to the Olympic Sculpture Park in Seattle. Colour photography, detailed plans, text in English and Spanish and the accumulated expertise of the folk at a+t make this an important publication.
