Description
Lon Krier borrowed the mythical name of Atlantis for his project in which he recreated an ideal town on the steep hills of an oceanic island, a town of art and culture, inspired by the most perfect models of Ancient Greece and the finest examples in the foundation of historic cities.
Atlantis is rather like a vast academy stretched over five hectares. It was intended to host exhibitions, meetings, performances, amidst all the activities connected with the life of an artists colony, a gathering of scientists, thinkers, patrons and students living together, working, debating and taking part in the revitalisation of ecological, cultural and aesthetic values, the richest and most threatened values of contemporary civilisation.
Behind the vast programme were Helga and Hans-Jrgen Mller, and Peter Klss, who got together in 1985 with the idea of bringing to life a utopian dream. In Atlantis, Krier conceived a traditional town, complex and hierarchical, picturesque and in perfect harmony with the islands natural site.
