Description
The earliest known wooden artefacts are about 14,000 years old. 8,000 year old cave paintings show wood as one of the original building materials used by humankind. The history of building with wood is so long that its properties and effects on the environment are thoroughly known, in contrast to modern synthetic materials. Wood is simultaneously an age-old material and a hope for the future.
This issue of A+U presents case studies of 15 wooden buildings from varied locations, showing how the versatile material can be adapted for extreme cold (Svalbard Science Centre), demonstrating stark poise and elegance (three Finnish churches), and generally showing a slew of attractive and fascinating projects (a 'resonating body' music rehearsal space in Austria; the 'Wave for Bern' bridge). As ever, the text, images and plans are of crisp quality. A fine magazine.
