Description

Sergei Diaghilev’s triumph as an impresario has, until now, inclined to overshadow the influence of his troupe on the design of the time - and since. This books corrects the balance by revealing how widespread the work of great designers and artists he used penetrated  a wider design culture.

The ensemble brought the stage and everyday life into creative contact with each other and permeated all aspects of design from haute couture, to interior design to furniture and fabrics.

Beautifully illustrated and drawing on unpublished images and memorabilia, this book illuminates the ways in which innovations by the Ballets Russes in dance, music, sets and costume both mirrored and invigorated contemporary design culture and stimulated the creative work of contemporary designers in France and internationally.

About the Author

Peter Hetherington, former regional affairs and northern editor of The Guardian, was a reporter at The Journal, Newcastle, covering local government – focussing on local politics and redevelopment – during the early 70s. Latterly he has written about planning, housing, regeneration and local government for The Guardian and other publications, and travelled extensively in Britain and overseas covering that field. He was a board member of the government's former Academy for Sustainable Communities, a member of its former urban sounding board, and is currently a vice president, trustee and policy council member of the Town and Country Planning Association.
