Description

Baumschlager-Eberle: Architecture, People and Resources is the comprehensive monograph of the work carried out between 2002 and 2007 by the architectural office of Baumschlager-Eberle. Founded in 1985, the practice, run by Carlo Baumschlager and Dietmar Eberle, has completed over 300 buildings. Recent major projects include the extension to Vienna International Airport, a large-scale hospital in the Belgian town of Kortrijk, tower blocks in Beijing and the WHO / UNAIDS building in Geneva. Baumschlager-Eberle (with Christian Bauer & Associs Architectes) recently won the international competition for the construction of "Maison du Savoir Belval and the urban planning project of "Cit des Sciences, de la Recherche et de lInnovation Belval" in Luxembourg.

Having initially focused on housing construction in Vorarlberg, Baumschlager-Eberle are now well established in the international arena. Central tenets of their architectural philosophy continue to be rigorous economy in the use of materials and artistic means and a convincing concept closely combined with a sense of cultural and social responsibility. As a professor in the postgraduate course for architects, designers and interior designers at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, Carlo Baumschlager endeavours to intensify the dialogue between the arts and to refine project-related design methodology.

Architecture, People and Resources, the title chosen for the book, is programmatic for Baumschlager-Eberle. In the Architecture section new projects are presented in the form of photos and plans, while that on People examines buildings from the point of view of their practicality and social function. The final section on Resources looks at the sustainability of the architecture designed by Baumschlager-Eberle.
