Description
Observation, whether by the human eye or the technical eye of a surveillance camera, requires an architectural support system elevating the viewer into a position of control. The system of Iron Age hill forts built across Britain over 2000 years ago used natural promontories to survey the surrounding landscape. Throughout history similar measures have been taken by rulers to exercise control over territory.
In mountainous south Armagh, the area around the border between the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland, the British army constructed a system of watchtowers to survey and observe the region and populace. These remarkable structures, landmarks of the conflict euphemistically known as 'the Troubles', were dismantled between 2000 and 2007. The author of this book spent a year photographing and surveying the towers, their positions and perspectives within the landscape. The result is a haunting portrait of militarisation, an unsettling and compromised landscape. Complete with a perceptive essay outlining the salient and unique features of this area and the towers, it is one of the most compelling books of the year.
