Description

The remarkably compelling story of the worlds most illustrious trading city.

Shanghais extraordinary past and phenomenal future is examined through the evolution of the citys architecture and urban form, looking not only at the history of Shanghais architecture and its urban development, but also putting it firmly within its social context.

Shanghai is home to some of the most influential colonial architecture in the world, outstanding examples of Modernism and Art Deco, and an exceptional selection of eclectic and vernacular architecture that reflects Shanghais many adopted cultures. This is beautifully illustrated through a combination of over 300 archival photographs, historical maps, and previously unseen technical drawings, as well as specially commissioned new colour photography.
