Description
Building the BBC: A Return to Form charts the BBCs newly dynamic approach to commissioning architecture and public art.
The Corporations current redevelopments include the BBCs flagship headquarters, Broadcasting House, which is set by 2008 to become the largest live broadcast centre in the world in an innovative scheme by MacCormac Jamieson Prichard. A new 17-acre White City development by Allies and Morrison will integrate the BBC far more into the local community with a broadcast centre, offices and greatly increased public access. In Glasgow, David Chipperfield is designing a new home for BBC Scotland at Pacific Quay, incorporating studios, offices and large public areas and in Birmingham, BDP have designed new accommodation for the BBC at the Mailbox development.
These developments are all placed within the context of the BBC's ongoing architectural patronage including its seminal developments at Broadcasting House in the 1930s and Television Centre in the 1960s
Building the BBC: A Return to Form examines one of the most ambitious and comprehensive architectural projects in the country and helps explain why the BBC was awarded the RIBA Journals Client of the Year in 2002.
