Description
Gion A. Caminada grew up in Vrin and this beautiful monograph by Quart Verlag largely focuses on the buildings he has designed there, and in the nearby valleys in the Graubunden / Grisons region of Switzerland. The book has been lovingly put together, and its remarkable that the publishers, Quart Verlag, are able to produce books to such quality and depth for some of the architects in the region; a wonderful, high-quality, niche Swiss publisher.
In this book, Caminada explains the important of building on tradition, evolving it, not just throwing out the past wholesale in a bid for new, exciting forms. He explains how continuity is important in building communities and he focuses on how his architecture can stop some of the emmigration from small villages to big cities. The buildings in this book focus on the essence of need for people living in this area, solid, protection from the elements, local, abundant material, built with local labour. He does this without descending to pastiche or romanticism.
