Now in paperback, this bookis the first title to focus on Adjaye's public projects as opposed to houses. The book examines ten developments in fine detail, particularly regarding plans and sketches. The Nobel Peace Centre and Stephen Lawrence Centre are among the projects covered, and the book is rounded off by a series of essays from luminaries such as Peter Allison, as well as a dialogue between Adjaye and cultural critic Kodwo Eshun.

This book, and the accompanying exhibition at the Whitechapel art gallery in London, is a chance to really see what David Adjaye is made of. After some years as a rising star best known for domestic commissions from artists and actors, he has finally got a chance to prove himself on substantial public projects such as the Whitechapel Ideas Store, the Bernie Grant Arts Centre and the Nobel Peace Center. Contributors such as editor Peter Allison discuss Adjaye’s inspirations, architectural philosophy and use of materials, and certainly this well-produced book makes a strong case for Adjaye’s importance as an architect capable of embracing today¹s key urban issues of social inclusion and diversity. But with many major projects yet to complete, it still feels a little early to pass judgement.
