Description

One of Britain's most daring and provocative buildings, the University of Leicester's Engineering Building (Stirling & Gowan, 1959-63, Grade II) has divided critics since it's opening. To many in the architectural community it represents what buildings can and should be: complex and sculptural, visually spectacular and loaded with reference and meaning. To its occupants and managers it has become a considerable challenge to live with and maintain. After fifty years of service it was, as buildings of this age and stature often are, in need of major but sympathetic refurbishment.

This book describes a £19.5m project to repair and upgrade it. While the prospect of re-glazing a glass building might seem simple, the reality has been formidably challenging; Diamond-tipped documents the process, exploring the nuances of the conservation approach, the intricacies of the design, and the continuing resonance of the building today.

Thomas Pearson is an architectural conservationist at Ove Arup & Partners in London. He designs sensitive interventions for historic buildings - from medieval stone to post-war glass. Alongside his work at Arup he publishes poetry and music.
