Description
Taken over a twenty-year period, photographer Joan Liftin recalls a culture of ephemeral evenings at the drive-in within her photographs - some of which are off-hand, some desultory, some with a startling mesmerising evocation of what the drive-in has meant to generations of Americans. There were once 6,000, coast to coast, but now, just under 550 remain in operation. The book evokes the sense of a slow extinction of this popular form of outdoor fun at the movies that traces its origins to 1933, in Camden, New Jersey, when an enterprising gas station owner projected a movie on his wall to entertain impatient customers. Hopefully, this zeitgeist will not perish.
