Description
From design policy to design quality offers a framework for the development of a comprehensive range of design policies for community strategies, local development frameworks and action plans.
In the wake of 2000 Urban White Paper, the 2001 Planning Green Paper, the formation of the inter-professional Urban Design Alliance (UDAL), and the increasingly influential work of the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE), this is a timely moment to further the role of planning in promoting design quality.
A total of 20 recommendations are put forward under four headings offering working directions for local authorities and designer/planners charged with implementing and monitoring design policies at the local level within development plans.
Focusing on topics such as a framework for design policies, the design dimension of planning, the process of design policy writing, implementation and monitoring and the fundamentals of design policy, this new guide will play a key part in further promoting greater design quality by clearly demonstrating how we move from policy to best practice in planning.
