Description
GATEPAC (Grupo de Artistas y Tcnicos Espaoles Para la Arquitectura Contempornea) was a group of architects assembled during the Second Spanish Republic. Its members included Josep Llus Sert, Josep Torres Clav, and German Rodriguez Arias. The group was formed in the 1930s as a Spanish branch of CIAM (the International Congress of Modern Architecture). The Eastern (Catalan) section of the group, called GATCPAC (Grup d'Arquitectes i Tcnics Catalans per al Progrs de l'Arquitectura Contempornia) was more successful than the Central or Northern sections, and carried out government contracts during the Second Republic.
Most, but not all GATEPAC members fought on the Republican side during the Civil War. Torres Clav was killed in action. Josep Llus Sert went into exile in the United States, ending up at Harvard University. Rodriguez Arias went to Chile, working with the renowned poet Pablo Neruda. This bilingual history of the movement, the first to become available, is beautifully produced and illustrated with archive material including photographs (of buildings and protagonists), plans and posters from the time. There is a timeline of projects by GATCPAC members, and a separate chapter on the hugely influential magazine A.C. (Actividad Contempornea), published by GATCPAC. A diverting account of a turbulent time.
