Description

Goa is an extremely bio-diverse land nestled between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea. Goa was colonised by the Portuguese till as late as 1961 and thus, this era characterises much of its contemporary patterns. The settlement fabric of Goa at the best spans out as a rurban network of villages with only a handful of urban centres. The architecture bears strong Indo-Portuguese influences. Since there was a constant exchange of thought and culture between Goa and Europe, the architecture also shows traces of Neo-Classic, Mannerist, Baroque and Neo-Gothic architectural styles. The looming balconies, the red-tiled roofs and the traditional hues exist as a retrospective take of these influences. In contemporary practices, ample experimentation and application is taking place with materials such as laterite, coconut wood, mud etc additionally to planned interventions and local techniques.
