Description

At a time of massive public investment in our building stock in all sectors, and a successful Olympic bid, the profession and the RIBA needs to hang on to and promote the best and the most diverse range of architectural talent. The most valuable asset of any business is its workforce so as professionals we have a duty to run our practices in a businesslike manner. This is not to say that innovation, collaboration and creative endeavours have to cease, but that relying on poor employment practice to achieve them is not the way for a forward thinking profession.

The RIBA historically has avoided advising members and member practices about their legal obligations and practice management, but the time has come to step in. This guide is essential for every architectural practice and will help to support and direct practices, particularly those starting up or which are too small to employ human resources managers.

Sustaining the profession relies on us all paying attention to employees and employment issues with the same rigour we apply to the rest of our activities.

About the Author

Brian Gegg

Brian Gegg LLB(Hons) MPhil(Cantab) joined Kennedys as a Partner in the Employment Law Group in October 2002.Brian advises on all aspects of employment law with specialisation in a variety of industries, in particular assisting with day-to-day HR management and strategy, sensitive boardroom disputes and restructuring programmes, tribunal and High Court litigation and injunctions, as well as non-contentious contract and policy drafting and dealing with the employment aspects of commercial deals, including M&A transactions, major projects, PFI transactions and outsourcing deals with emphasis on the application of the TUPE regulations.Brian has lectured widely on employment law and is the author of the RIBA Student Employment Contract. He is an Online Advisor for the Workplace Law Network. He acts for a variety of professional services partnerships and companies, including architects, surveyors, accountants and management consultants.

David Sharp

David Sharp BA(Hons) Dip.M is the founder and Managing Director of the Workplace Law Group, which provides employment law and health and safety advice to UK businesses. A former editor at Croner and publisher at Financial Times Business, David has specialised in the provision of regulatory support services for 15 years.
