Description

We all get it wrong from time to time and are aware of others mistakes, yet the evidence shows that we still never learn from these mistakes. Professional Indemnity Insurers and ARB will tell you that architects go on making the same mistakes time and time again be it small or large practices, inexperienced and mature. The potential for getting into trouble with clients, fees, building contracts and with the law is huge. The trip wires for the unwary are everywhere, some obvious, others less so.

This guide highlights the areas where things consistently go wrong listing common mistakes that can usually be avoided. Many of these mistakes may appear obvious but are still consistently made and are at the heart of many disputes such as those concerning negligence and breach of contract claims against architects.

Owen Luder

Owen Luder CBE PPRIBA FRSA MAE was uniquely twice elected RIBA President (1981–83 and 1995–97) and Vice Chairman and Chairman of the Architects Registration Board (1997–2003) and was a nationally elected member of the RIBA Council almost continuously from 1967 to 1998.

He qualified in 1954 and started his own ‘one-man’ office in the late 1950s, which grew into a major architectural practice with offices in Wales, Harrogate and Newcastle in the UK and associated offices in Nigeria and Saudi Arabia. He was responsible for the design and construction of many large commercial, industrial, retail, leisure and housing projects, urban and environmental planning and regeneration schemes in the UK and abroad.

In 1976 his practice, the Owen Luder Partnership, converted to company status. In 1987 he withdrew to revert to being a one-man band, working as an independent architect, urban designer and marketing and construction consultant. He is a member of the Academy of Experts and a qualified mediator.

From 1984 to 1991 he organised, chaired and was a speaker for the RIBA Services Practice seminars, and from then until 2003 organised the Building Design practice update seminars. He still lectures to Part 3 students and young architects on ‘Keeping Out of Trouble’.

He was editor and presenter for the Architectural Practice videos and a regular columnist for many years with Building and Building Design magazines. He was awarded the publishers’ Business Columnist of the Year award in 1987
