Description

Iconocity is the first publication created by the artist Aglaia Konrad, published alongside her exhibition at deSingel international arts centre, Antwerp at the end of last year. Konrads photographs examine urban border zones the periphery, urban infrastructure, construction sites, and anonymous buildings remote from the typical urban scenarios. Independently of their functions and contexts, these buildings reveal an unspectacular uniformity of design whose vocabulary of form can be read as a code of modernism. Her photographs of numerous metropolises around the world testify that modernism is a global system, eluding rigid borderlines. The decontextualization of the images places them into a stately flow, freed from the moorings of time and place. This photographic odyssey is hypnotic and absorbing.
