Description
In view of the growing number of diverse life styles, the search for flexible, adaptable floor plans has become a fundamental issue in residential building. That the continued demand in urban centres can only be responsibly satisfied by high-density housing is undisputed. More than ever before, building high-density housing is a complex, diverse and challenging task for planners and architects. This book presents international projects which document the breadth and complexity of the task, from the design of the floor plans, the development and use of resources, to the use of economically beneficial building systems. The high quality of the architecture and construction in such residential areas can be clearly seen in the uniform illustrations of the floor plans, and large-scale drawings of details which facilitate comparison. The introductory contributions discuss extensively the difficult and provocative topic of floor plan design and development. This book is a comprehensive review of the current state of residential building, the perspectives, trends and future developments.

Review by Frank Filskow, Partner, Make Architects.
This addition to the “In Detail” series presents twenty-two selected international examples of recent high-density housing developments and offers an invaluable reference point for architects and urban designers considering any form of Housing proposal.
In 1935, Le Corbusier proposed a model for single-family homes in a city context, and proclaimed the merits of transposing the traditional historic city from the horizontal to the vertical plane, thus making sun, space and views available to all. Now, seventy years later, it has never been more necessary to evolve an ecological city and to prevent further urban sprawl. This book forces us to consider the densification of our cities, the development of ideas for high density housing, and its socio-economic implications. Including detailed presentations illustrated with clear plans as well as photographs it challenges architects and urban designers to rise to the task of creating high quality housing in cities that goes beyond the requirements of young individuals.
Schittich understandably draws heavily on housing in Germany. In particular, there have been many state-lead initiatives to promote high-density housing, and there is a culture of care and maintenance not often apparent Britain. By drawing on this rich resource, Schittich has given designers in this country the opportunity to discover innovative apartment housing solutions, whilst still responding to the local market.
