Description

This edition of JA, a full-colour journal from Japan Architect, features the sketch. Hand-drawn plans and sketches are considered to reflect the various thoughts during the process of a design. Drawn by the designer's own hand, they are physical in nature as opposed to the use of the currently relied upon computer (CAD). Therein the sketch lies in the lucid expression of the intended design of a space-- in other words, it is a straightforward expression. Regardless of the changes that may occur during the process of design, there are those ideas which do not change. Through an investigation of the sketch, the possibilities of architecture are likely to be revealed.

Works featured include Shiro Kuramata's Magnet Project, Miss Blanche, and Dream Diary; Toyo Ito's Bruges 2002 Pavilion; and Taira Nishizawa's Housing A and B in Cho-Fu.
