Description
Geometric schema are the source of many notable landmarks. From the Renaissance onward, it has become commonplace to presume that geometric diagrams are implicit to architecture. More recently, plans have revealed functional compositions in topological terms.
However, while these diagrams serve to aid comprehension or as a representation of an idea, they are not an architect's tools of creation. They cannot serve to produce a new architecture. This edition of JA seeks to elucidate what sort of diagram would be effective in such a quest.
A new architecture does not exist until it is realised. What does exist is only a 'something' - a 'phantom' - inside an architect's mind. This 'phantom' must be given physical form. Here, JA refers to such realised ideas as 'spatial phantoms' and through presenting the design process and work of 10 architects (including Jun Aoki, Kazuyo Sejima and Ryoji Suzuki) the magazine demonstrates how these phantoms have acquired tangible form. Featuring a welter of varied design illustrations, this is a diverting treatise.
