Description
The dangers of fire in buildings are lethal and catastrophic; the need to design buildings to limit those dangers is as important now as it always has been. Legislation Maze: Fire is a concise, highly accessible and up-to-date first point of reference for architects to all aspects of fire safety legislation. Organised according to the RIBAs Outline Plan of Work, the guidance covers both the 2006 edition of Part B of the Building Regulations and the significant new requirements of The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
Compliance with fire safety legislation can have a profound influence on the design of buildings and can result in considerable amount of abortive effort if an architect fails to address and incorporate solutions as the design develops. Part of a series of books that comprise short, easy-to-use topic based guidance to legislation for architects, Legislation Maze: Fire is an essential desktop aide-memoire for those with responsibility for ensuring the life safety of their clients in the event of fire.

Review by Will Marshall, Principal Engineer, Jeremy Gardner Associates
Legislation Maze: Fire is one of a series of books covering relevant legislation. This book sets out to explain the legislation in relation to fire for building projects. Generally the book achieves this aim. The book doesn’t describe recommendations of this legislation, but does advise where to look to find this information.
The author originally trained as an architect and his knowledge of the process is therefore good. The book is broadly split into two main sections. The first describes the legislative framework and the second describes how this legislation is applied to each of the work stages of a project.
The second sections starts with a table summarising the considerations relating to fire strategy suggested at each of the RIBA stages. The remainder of this section then describes each of these suggestions in more detail.
This book deals exclusively with the legislation in England and Wales and, although the broad principles apply, the book is therefore best suited to projects within England and Wales.
