Description
'Black and white photographs of gardens - an idea whose time has come? Well, gone and come perhaps - this latest in Aurum Press' series of excerpts from the Country Life archives reproduces photos from a largely vanished age (pre-WW2) when one suspects that everything was in black and white. The monochromaticity of the pictures lends them an elegant austerity - formal gardens that might look sickly in full colour acquire the romantic tint of early British cinema, especially if there is a mustachioed figure in the middle distance. It's true that too much nostalgia will make a man twisted, but then again some things merit preserving, including beautifully shot pictures of hedges cut into the shape of cobras. Elegiac evidence that the past is indeed a foreign country. This is a superior coffee table tome from an age before coffee tables'.
