Louisiana, the "low pavilion in the park" to the north of Copenhagen, is a notable exemplar of how to integrate cool modernity with natural surroundings, but its architects remain largely unknown. This book redresses the balance for at least one of them - the modest Vilhelm Wohlert, dubbed by Jorn Utzon the most Danish of all the country's architects. The book tells the story of Wohlert and his smooth, striking buildings - Louisiana, the Niels Bohr Pavilion, the numerous houses that followed and public buildings not just in Denmark but Algeria, Afghanistan and elsewhere. The mix of photographs (monochrome and colour), plans, sketches and anecdote perfectly conveys both the essence of the buildings and an intoxicating, intangible glamour on a very human scale.
