Description

This catalogue accompanies the exhibition M City at Kunsthaus Graz. M City focuses on medium-sized European cities. Using a scheme of six key concepts of current urbanistic debate (Mapping / Earthscape / Eurosprawl / Shopping / Migration / No Vision?) and a sample base of six European cities (Llubljana / Graz / Trieste / Ruhr City / Krakow / Basle), artists, architects and urban theorists draw a richly faceted picture of the profound process of transformation from core towns to sprawling conurbations. The fascinating story that these pictures, reports, modes of procedure and analyses of the new urban landscape have to tell may comfort anyone nostalgic for the lost 'urban city'. The combination of essays and art is curiously compelling, and there remains something indefinable about Trieste... "a continual and general sense of disorientation" - sometimes these feelings are good for the blood. Bilingual in English and German.
