Description
Matchibako depicts Japans swift transformation into an industrial empire in the early 20th century, as illustrated in the advertisements on matchboxes from that period. In an uncertain society, with its changing leisure market, matches joined cigarettes in Western style hotels and cafes, as well as the sushi bars. Patrons of these places were dressed in western dress or traditional kimono, but all were debating Marx or the latest silent film.
Although most of the cards were anonymously designed, these tiny reminders alternatively show the influence of Cubism and the Bauhaus in illustrations and English type, whilst retaining the conventional wood block fonts and right to left Japanese text.
Matchibako is a delightful little collection of these images from the other side of the globe, and from another age.
