Description
New Zen is the first ever book dedicated to showcasing the best examples of modern Japanese tea-ceremony rooms (chashitsu). The tea ceremony was established in Japan in the15th century when it became an essential part of culture for the elite Japanese. Traditionally chashitsu are made up of certain elements, they never contain furniture and are used for contemplation.
Since the 1990s Japanese architects and designers have been reinterpreting the chashitsu, creating modern meditative spaces. Their efforts represent some of the most interesting and innovative contemporary interior design and architecture in the world, featuring a vast array of materials, including paper, wood, plastic, stone, aluminium, glass and concrete.
This book includes a fascinating introduction explaining the history of the tea ceremony and the ritual of the ceremony itself along with a useful glossary and floor plan. Architectural projects featured in the book include a treehouse in the countryside in Nagano, a portable room made of aluminium and an example in acrylic in a tea institute in Tokyo. The work features37 recent projects by a range of well-known architects and designers, including Kengo Kuma, Kisho Kurokawa, Terunobu Fujimori, Takashi Sugimoto and Shigeru Uchida.
