Description
Patterns, in the sense of paradigms and models, have served as points of reference for architecture since the Middle Ages. Patterns are also the basis for the history of ornament, an aesthetic phenomenon that is an essential bond between all eras and cultures. The avant-garde movement in the early twentieth century critically re-examined and questioned the ornament, yet from the 1960s onward, new correlations were established for the concept of pattern. Oscillating between abstraction and interpretation, pattern has played an essential role in various disciplines including cognitive science, computer science, and neurobiology. Examining architecture shows that the pattern concept can no longer be discussed as a category of the ornament; on the contrary: ornament is derived from the new notions of pattern and pattern formation that are influenced by information technology.
