This sumptuous meditation on bathing, paganism and construction in Switzerland is also an extensively-illustrated account of the architecture and construction of the famous spa designed by Zumthor. Built to take advantage of naturally occurring thermal springs that had already attracted hotel development, one of the concepts informing the design was the continuum of the springs and, by association, the baths in effect the baths were designed to look as if they pre-dated the hotel complex, as if they were a form of cave or quarry-like structure. The building is made up of 15 different table-like units that fit together like a jigsaw puzzle, with 60,000 metre-long stone sections forming the cladding. The building was listed less than two years after completion.
This book links the construction to traditions of bathing and baths, and is beautifully presented with many preliminary sketches, plans and atmospheric photographs.
