Description
This bookaccompanies the third series of the BBC TVprogram 'Restoration'. The popular BBCseriesattempts to draw attention to the country's dilapidated historic structures, with a view to restoring them. In this current seriesthespotlight is on the plight ofhistoric buildings within the nation's villages and communities. There is a public vote at the end of each series and thewinning building receives a full restoration using the money raised through the program.
The book covers 20 buildings in 7 different regions of the UK - as can be imagined, there are a few churches in there, but also a twine works in Somerset, a gun battery in Hartlepool, a quarry in Carmarthenshire and more. Each entry is well-described and illustrated, with fine photographs, and suggestions as to how they could be viably restored. The foreword is by the evocatively-named Ptolemy Dean, who was born to be an architect if anyone was. Whether you are interested in conservation or British social history, this book will hold something diverting.
