Roofing: Technical Review

Roofing, part of the RIBA Publishing Technical Review series examines the technical issues and roofing techniques which architects, building surveyors and others need to consider in the design and specification of roofing.

The issues covered in the first chapter include the influence of the form of the roof on the selection of roof covering, roof covering and the importance of wind loading, moisture and environmental impact and durability which includes fire, maintenance, and health and safety. The book then considers the most commonly used roofing techniques in the UK, Insulation, Slates, tiles and shingles, Metal sheet, Bituminous and polymeric membranes.

Each topic is discussed with reference to the main options available to designers, their implications in terms of function and performance (including environmental impact), the way in which they are used (laid and fixed or applied) and the most critical issues of detail which must be resolved.

Although the focus of the Review is new build construction, mention is made of existing roofs throughout the text, with much of the information being applicable in both situations. This text is written in a way to encourage designers to explore their own ideas and follow-up the references made throughout the book. It also promotes good practice and continuing professional development within this important field.

This is a straightforward, well-packaged booklet that provides just enough information for designers to begin, confidently, to design and specify almost any roof. Chapters cover slates, shingles, sheet coverings, single plies and much more. Clear dimensions, material facts, workability data, durability issues and potential faults accompany synopses of statutory guidelines and Approved Documents. Even more important than the purposeful photographs, are the readable cross-sections and handy annotated details. Importantly, Garrand has left out just the right amount of information, opting for a concise bibliography at the back, for those who want to find out more. This book is indisputably “useful.”
