Description
Siemens, one of the worlds oldest and largest electrical companies, can look back today on over a century of product design history. This colourful volume vividly illustrates the exceptionally important role that design has played in electrical engineering, tracing 100-odd years of Siemens design development, and with it a substantial portion of the history of German industrial design, based on examples from the major product fields and function areas.
The stated objective is to paint a multifaceted picture of the Siemens design culture during the 20th century, while pursuing the question of what influence the specific exigencies of "electrical design" exercised on the shapes given to Siemens products and which important stations were traversed along the way. Bilingual in English and German, it is a handsomely illustrated and informative tome, if not quite multifaceted enough to mention that Siemens ran a factory at Ravensbruck and supplied parts to other camps (a coy reference to "government and military contracts" is as close as it gets). There is a chapter on the "advertising and propaganda strategies of the National Socialist period", however. Intriguing.
