Description

Sir George Oatley (1863-1950) was Bristol's most significant twentieth-century architect. His buildings - including banks, offices, factories, churches, shops and houses - transformed the face of the city. His greatest works were designed for Bristol University, and its Wills Memorial Building of 1925 was the last great Gothic secular building to be built in Britain.

Sarah Whittingham tells the story of Oatley's very full life from his poor childhood on the Isle of Wight, to running the most succesful architectural practice in Bristol. Throughout the tale runs the thread of Oatley's Nonconformism, which instilled in him incredible generosity and immense modesty, but also provided him with many Nonconformist clients, most notably the Wills family of tobacco fame.
