The Specifiers Handbooks for Inclusive Design series has been prepared to assist designers, specifiers, building owners and occupiers, building managers and facilities managers to understand key design aspects and characteristics of specific architectural elements. It combines technical guidance with informative case studies, aiming to facilitate a practical understanding of the element in focus. The information will assist people responsible for the selection and specification of each architectural element to make decisions which will lead to the procurement of the most suitable products. The information will also assist people who are responsible for ongoing maintenance to understand the importance of regular checks and the implications for disabled and other people if equipment is taken out of action for any reason.

It offers practical guidance to help designers, specifiers and facilities managers to understand the different types of glass available, related legislation, building regulations and standards, as well as operation and maintenance issues. The design guidance is supported by case study examples that illustrate how different inclusive design issues are resolved in a range of situations.

About the Author
Ann Alderson
Ann Alderson is a chartered architect with over 30 years’ experience in the construction industry, principally in research. She currently works freelance for the Centre for Accessible Environments as an inclusive design consultant and author of guidance books and training packages, and the Sustainable Development Foundation, undertaking research and consultancy in the healthcare sector. From 1998 to 2006 Ann worked for CIRIA, initiating, funding and managing research projects through to publication on all aspects of building design and technology. Prior to that she worked for BRE undertaking research in Europe.Ann has recently written two Specifier’s Handbooks, on internal floor finishes and glass, and a book on the inclusive design of stairs, ramps and escalators for CAE. She has authored several reports for SHINE, through the Sustainable Development Foundation. Ann also wrote a series of books for BRE on approval and control procedures in different European countries, including Denmark, Sweden and France.
