Description
Owing to the specific conditions of the space in which they are installed, staircases tend to be customised, one-off design features. For this reason they cannot readily be classified according to preset typological standards or stylistic categories.
The aim of this book, exclusive to RIBA Bookshops in the UK, is to explore the vast range of these 'episodes', in which technology and expression are basically inseparable, and which demonstrate a remarkable variety of ways of addressing emblematic architectural situations. 65 staircase exemplars are presented, most in Italy but also including the likes of Steven Holl, and are shown with photographs, plans and a bilingual (English/Italian) text which explains the staircase in context. There is fascinating variety on show here, from Antonio Barbieri's disconnected wall-mounted black steps to a polished steel-and-mirrors nightmare in a trendy Milan store.
