The story goes that Frank Gehry crumpled up one of his cigarette packets, tossed it over to one of his visualisers, and the Bilbao Guggenheim was conceived. True or not, inspiration can be found anywhere, and in Vyzoviti’s little book there’s 140 pages of it, all taking two-dimensional materials and by crumpling, cutting and folding them, realising three. This is a back to basics approach to form generation using paper, plastic and foam, and the brainpower of the author’s students. Some are novel but pointless, some seem influenced by existing forms and structures and hence derivative; but some, out of iteration or sheer repetition, show the potential to act as a primer and release unseen architectures.
