Description

In this programme, lvaro Siza talks about his architecture and its underlying ideas, as well as addressing current trends in the architectural world. He justifies his pragmatic approach to design and discusses various attempts to define his work as examples ofmodernism, expressionism and new urbanism. Sizas conception
of tradition is explored as a dynamic process, while his view that a good architect works slowly is explained.

The programme also looks at architecture from a broader perspective, specifically in the context of Portugals political history and Sizas social housing. The programme also includes images of lvaro Sizas buildings, along with several examples of his famous sketches, some of which have not been made public before.

lvaro Siza Vieira
lvaro Siza Vieira is an architect and a resident of Porto, Portugal, where his practice lvaro Siza Architects is based. With the exception of the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2005, lvaro has not built in Britain, but his architecture has nevertheless been recognised with the RIBA's 2009 Royal Gold Medal. His work is diverse and difficult to categorise, varying from the Galician Centre of Contemporary Art at Santiago de Compostela and the Faculty of Architecture at Porto University, to social housing projects and the Lea da Palmeira swimming pool. He has been recognised with numerous honours, including the 1992 Pritzker Prize for his renovation of the Chiado neighborhood in Lisbon.
