Description
This volume encompasses three centuries of London's metropolitan growth westward, from Georgian St Marylebone and the riverside terraces of Chelsea and Chiswick to Heathrow Airport and the outer fringes of Middlesex Metroland. Streaked with industrial developments alongside canal, road and railway, the diverse residential suburbs extend from the select stucco streets of Kensington and Paddington, studded with Victorian churches, to more leisurely Edwardian roads winding over the uplands of Ealing and Harrow. Individual buildings range from medieval churches and farmhouses of once rural Middlesex villages to the stately Victorian cultural institutions which made South Kensington internationally famous. Country mansions of distinction - Burlington's Chiswick House, Soane's Pitshanger - still grace the outer areas whilst stimulating buildings from the last fifty years range from art deco factories and cinemas to progressive social housing and the late 20th century business park.
