Description
In Portugal tiles have been used on a monumental scale from the 16th century and the fondness for cladding buildings in tiles has continued uninterrupted to modern times. It is an artistic tradition deeply rooted inPortuguese culture, which reveals both a very effective practical adroitness and enormous visual and artistic imagination.
Using tiles meant that walls were protected with a material that rendered them impermeable and made them easy and inexpensive to to maintain, but also created amazing aesthetic overlays. Portuguese tiles have been credited with the role of telling stories and communicating ideas and emotions through the images displayed.
Throughout the 17th century a limitless range of patterned motifs was developed, which could cover wall surfaces ranging from miniscule to immense. It is virtually impossible not to encounter striking tableaux when strolling around Portugals old cities. Tile Designs from Portugal contains over 100 designs originating from the 17th and 18th century. All have been meticulously restored and vectorised for this book.
