Opening this book brought back memories of my days at Sheffield School of Architecture. The dust and cramped conditions of the studios at Shearwood Road and then the move in the third year to the top of the Arts Tower and the state of the art drawing machines. Peter Blundell Jones paints a fascinating picture of the life and growth of the school over its 100 years of development. First through the early years of the schools parochial beginnings and then on to its growth in later years tracing the influences of architectural fashion and the prevailing political climate. The book reminisces changes and influences different professors wrought on the schools development and direction and provides an introduction to some of the more eminent students who passed through its portals. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the development of schools of architecture and how they have changed to reflect the architectural and political mood. Certainly for anyone who attended the University of Sheffield School of Architecture, this book is a must.
